Places you can reach in the morning and leave in the evening. Public transport first; the car only where it really helps.
Al Ain

Best time to go
Oct-Apr
By car
Public transport is the better way to go here. About 1 h 33 min by car. About 146 km (OSRM routing). Not recommended: parking in old Dubai is scarce and the train and E100 bus cover the trip; Darb tolls apply leaving Abu Dhabi island at peak times.
Good to know
- Book the train ahead in the Etihad Rail app: there are only a few trains each way and the fixed 'Saver' fare cannot be changed.
- Plan to be at Dubai Station by 18:00 for the 18:14, the last train back; otherwise take the E100 bus from Al Ghubaiba.
- Al Fahidi Fort (Dubai Museum) is closed for renovation in October 2026; see Al Shindagha Museum instead.
- Keep a small coin or note for the AED 1 abra; dress modestly in the souks.
Jebel Hafeet
Abu Dhabi emirate's only mountain (1,249 m) on the Oman border south of Al Ain: drive the winding road to the summit, see 5,000-year-old beehive tombs at its foot and finish at the Green Mubazzarah warm springs. Best done by car, often combined with Al Ain.
How to get there
What to see
- Summit road and viewpoints. Winding mountain road to the top, with views over Al Ain; sunrise and sunset are the popular times. 60-90 min including the drive up.
- Jebel Hafit Desert Park and beehive tombs. Bronze Age tombs (Hafit period, about 3200-2600 BCE) on the northern and eastern foothills, part of the UNESCO Cultural Sites of Al Ain; the park runs guided hikes to them. 60-120 min.
- Green Mubazzarah Park. Free-entry park at the mountain's foot with lawns used for family picnics and warm spring water running through it; locals come in the cooler months. 45-60 min.

Best time to go
Oct-Mar (Wikipedia: usually below 25 C on the mountain in these months)
By car
A car makes this trip easier. About 2 h by car. About 176 km to the summit, about 2 h each way (OSRM routing). Public intercity buses only go to Al Ain town (AD Mobility), so the mountain, the desert park and Green Mubazzarah need a car or taxi. Darb toll gates on the Abu Dhabi island bridges charge AED 4 per crossing 07:00-09:00 and 15:00-19:00, free on Sundays and official holidays.
Good to know
- Combine with Al Ain: oasis or Al Ain Museum in the morning, the mountain for the late afternoon light.
- For the beehive tombs, book a guided hike with Jebel Hafit Desert Park; times and fees not verified 2026.
- The Mercure Grand Jebel Hafit hotel near the summit is the place for a meal with a view (Visit Al Ain).
Liwa Oasis and Tal Moreeb
A long desert day to the Liwa date-palm oases on the edge of the Empty Quarter and Tal Moreeb, one of the tallest dunes in the region. For people who want real desert scenery rather than a packaged safari; it is 5-6 hours of driving in total.
How to get there
- Bus · Abu Dhabi Mobility (Capital Express CX60) · 3 h 10 minFrom Abu Dhabi Central (Main) Bus Station
Departures: 6 a day: 07:30, 10:00, 12:30, 15:00, 17:30, 20:00 to Mezaira'a (Liwa) bus station; back 06:00, 08:30, 11:00, 13:30, 16:00, 18:30
Fare: AED 35 one way to Liwa (checked 2026-10)
Reaches Mezaira'a only; there is no bus to Tal Moreeb (about 25 km further), so a bus day trip shows the oasis town only. Times from the 2024 Capital Express timetable PDF linked by AD Mobility. Etihad Rail's Liwa station is due later (Gulf News: 30 Nov 2026; Visit Abu Dhabi: Al Dhafra from 30 Dec 2026).

- The Liwa International Festival runs for about three weeks in December around Tal Moreeb, with motorsport and traditional souks; expect traffic.
