The only Beijing lane traceable under the same name to the Yuan dynasty, named after the brick pagoda of the monk Wansong Laoren; heritage scholar Luo Zhewen called it the root of Beijing's hutongs. Lu Xun lived at No. 61 in 1923-24 and wrote Soap there. It is a plain neighbourhood lane by Xisi that few visitors know.
