The largest historic han in Istanbul, founded in 1651 by Kösem Valide Sultan and long home to Iranian merchants; a Shi'a mosque still stands in its main courtyard. Its northeast corner incorporates the 27 m Byzantine 'Tower of Eirene', the only such tower left in the city.
