Completed around 328 for the dedication of Constantinople in 330, it is the oldest Constantinian monument surviving in Istanbul and stood at the centre of the Forum of Constantine. The iron hoops added around 1515 gave it and the whole district the name Çemberlitaş ('hooped stone').
