Founded in 462 by the consul Flavius Studius, the monastery's rules became the model for Mount Athos and much of the Orthodox world, and hymns written here are still sung. Its ruined church, known as the İmrahor Mosque, has been derelict for centuries; its 13th-century pavement lies open to the elements.

- In 2013 plans were announced to convert the church (then a museum) into a mosque; restoration was announced in 2023 and was ongoing as of January 2024, so access may be limited to the outside.
- It is near the Marmara shore in the old Psamathia quarter, close to the Koca Mustafa Paşa Mosque.
