Easy to miss on the walk from Praça do Comércio to Alfama: a richly carved Manueline portal, much like those on the south façade of the Jerónimos, set into a plain post-earthquake church. It was built under Manuel I on the site of the old synagogue, at Queen Leonor's request, for Our Lady of Mercy (Misericórdia); the portal and a 17th-century chapel are what survived the 1755 earthquake.
