A small square of jacarandas around an 18th-century fountain, the Chafariz do Carmo, between the roofless Gothic Convento do Carmo and the Quartel do Carmo. On 25 April 1974 Marcelo Caetano, head of the Estado Novo regime, took refuge in this barracks while Captain Salgueiro Maia's troops surrounded it, one of the defining scenes of the Carnation Revolution.
