The steam pumping station opened in 1880 to lift Alviela river water to the city's reservoirs; the old boiler hall now tells the story of Lisbon's water supply from Roman times, with Carlos Mardel's plans for the Mãe d'Água and the contador de pancada water meter used in Lisbon homes until the 1960s.
