The city's own theatre in Chiado opened on 22 May 1894 as the Teatro Dona Amélia, designed by the French architect Louis Reynaud. After 1910 it became the Teatro da República, was rebuilt after a fire in 1914 and in 1930 became Portugal's first sound cinema; today it is one of the busiest stages in Lisbon.
