A 19th-century Italian-style theatre between Chiado and Bairro Alto, opened on 30 November 1867 by Francisco Palha to a design by Miguel Evaristo. It has been a cinema, an opera house and a stage for Josephine Baker; after 1974 it put on plays the censors had banned. It still aims at popular repertoire of quality, and the main hall carries the name of the actress Carmen Dolores.
