William Van Alen's 1930 Art Deco tower with its stainless-steel sunburst crown. The detail most people miss is inside: the lobby ceiling is a 110-by-67-foot mural, Edward Trumbull's 'Transport and Human Endeavor', over red Moroccan marble; outside, look for the hubcap frieze and radiator-cap gargoyles on the 31st floor and the eagles on the 61st.
