Manhattan's last stretch of natural forest and salt marsh, where a boulder and plaque, Shorakkopoch Rock, mark the spot of a giant tulip tree that stood for 280 years and the legend that Peter Minuit bought Manhattan from the Lenape here in 1626. The Straus family of Macy's had a country estate in the park; its foundation is still there.
