A fixture of Little Egypt on Steinway Street since 2000, and a lifelong art project: chef-owner Mustafa El Sayed covered the room in mosaics, found objects and Egyptian motifs, and hangs bedsheets between the booths. He comes to the table to recite what he is cooking; expect sauteed chicken livers, tagines, couscous and lamb shank.

Good to know
- BYOB: bring a couple of bottles of wine and plan to linger, food comes slowly because one man cooks it.

- Listen for the day's specials when Mustafa comes over; there is barely a fixed menu.
