Built 1809-15 to designs by Joseph-François Mangin, the first Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of New York and the original St. Patrick's. Its brick outer walls went up in 1834, and that same year parishioners cut loopholes in them and defended the church with muskets against nativist rioters. The 80-minute Catacombs by Candlelight tour takes you into the burial vaults beneath it, resting place of the Delmonico family, Tammany boss 'Honest John' Kelly and the first resident Bishop of New York, plus the churchyard and the Henry Erben organ that are off-limits on a normal visit.
