Opened in 1968 as the country's first Black fine arts museum, it reopened in 2025 in a new building on 125th Street after seven years of construction. A stone staircase runs up the building like a spine from 'the stoop', a free community hangout at street level, to a roof garden with skyline views; the shows draw on a 9,000-piece collection and its famous artist-in-residence program.
