The Bronx's oldest house, built in 1748-49 as the seat of the Van Cortlandt family's 'Yonkers plantation'; George Washington stayed here in 1776 and 1783. The museum is frank that enslaved Africans worked this land from 1698 to 1823, and that they dammed Tibbetts Brook to make the mill pond park-goers still walk past.
