Mercato di San Cosimato

MarketLocal favourite

Trastevere's own food market, covered since at least 1913, where some stallholders are the third generation selling fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat and fish to the rione. Visitors stay on the bar streets a few blocks north and miss it; residents do their daily spesa here and chat at the stalls.

Good to know

  • Come in the morning; stalls pack up in the early afternoon and the market is closed on Sunday.
  • The Pettini family cheese and salumi stall has specialised since the 1980s in small-producer 'ricercatezze alimentari'.
  • The piazza has a playground and a take-a-book, leave-a-book shelf: families do the shopping and stay.
