One of Rome's four papal basilicas, over the traditional tomb of St Paul; rebuilt after the 1823 fire, it keeps Arnolfo di Cambio's 1285 ciborium, the mosaic frieze of papal portraits and the Vassalletto cloister (1205-1241), called one of the most beautiful of the Middle Ages.
