The Republic's shipyard. Its land gate, the Porta Magna (1457-60), is one of the first Renaissance works in Venice; the four stone lions in front were brought in 1687, one from Delos and one with runic inscriptions on its flank. Inside, the 317-metre Corderie rope-works host the Biennale.
