A great wall of Istrian stone the Republic built in 1744-1782 to keep the Adriatic out of the lagoon; it runs about 5 km on the Lido and 10 km on Pellestrina. Venetians love it: they come to sunbathe on the rocks, swim, barbecue and sit in the wood-and-straw huts built along it by anonymous locals. When it failed in the storm of 4 November 1966, the sea flooded Venice.
