Orsoni Venezia 1888 (mosaic furnace)

Culture venueLocal favourite

The only furnace in historic Venice still allowed to work with live fire. Since 1888 Orsoni has made smalti and 24-carat gold-leaf mosaic tesserae; its 'Library of Color' holds more than 3,500 shades, including the gold used for St Mark's Basilica, and its tiles went to the Sagrada Familia spires. Hidden at the end of Cannaregio behind San Giobbe, far from Murano's showrooms.

Good to know

  • Contact Orsoni before going: it is a factory, not a shop.
  • Ask to see the Library of Color, shelves of enamel samples like books.
  • Walk back along the Cannaregio canal to the Ghetto, ten minutes away.
