Built in 1694 as the residence of the future Yongzheng Emperor and turned into a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Gelug school in 1744, it became the Qing court's centre for Tibetan affairs. It is still a working temple, thick with incense, with yellow imperial roof tiles.
