The "dirt market" that began in the late 1980s as neighbours selling household things on blankets is now about 4,000 vendors of coins, jade, calligraphy, old posters and furniture, real and reproduction. Weekend stalls open before dawn, and regulars like the book lover China Daily met in 2026 come almost every weekend for the second-hand book stalls behind the bracelet sheds.
