Public transport options

Buenos Aires has six subte (metro) lines, A, B, C, D, E and H, plus the Premetro light rail: more than 64 km and 108 stations. Line A (1913) was the first underground railway in South America and the Southern Hemisphere. Numbered colectivos (city buses) reach every corner of the city around the clock, helped by ten bus-only Metrobus corridors. Suburban trains run from Retiro, Constitución and Once, including the Mitre line to Tigre and the Roca line to La Plata. Pay with a SUBE card or, on the subte and colectivos, with a contactless Visa or Mastercard (also foreign cards) or a phone. Black-and-yellow taxis are everywhere, and Uber, Cabify and DiDi are widely used.

Paying: SUBE (rechargeable card, ARS 1,500 per argentina.gob.ar, Oct 2026) valid on subte, colectivos, trains, Metrobus and river boats; or a contactless Visa/Mastercard (credit, debit or prepaid, foreign cards accepted), phone or watch with NFC, or a QR code on the subte and colectivos.

How to buy

Buy the SUBE card at a Punto SUBE (kiosks, lottery shops; map in the SUBE app or on sube.gob.ar), at a SUBE Centro de Atención (e.g. Constitución station, Av. Brasil 1128, Mon-Fri 08:00-18:00) or online; Buquebus says tourists can also get one at the Visit Buenos Aires stand in its Puerto Madero terminal and at the city's tourist information centres. Top up at subte stations, automatic terminals and Puntos SUBE. Register (nominalizar) the card online, by phone (0800-777-7823, option 3) or in the SUBE app: unregistered cards pay a much higher fare (about 1.4 times on the subte, 1.6 times on city buses, double on trains and national bus lines), and registration also protects your balance if the card is lost. Maximum balance ARS 40,000; emergency credit ARS -1,200. The subte rewards frequent riders: 20% off from the 21st trip in a calendar month, 30% from the 31st and 40% from the 41st, with any payment method as long as you use the same one. Red SUBE gives 50% off the second ride and 75% off the third and later rides within two hours, but only on the SUBE card (not on bank cards or QR), and since 2026 the city excludes subte-after-train and provincial-bus-as-second-ride combinations.
