Argentina's capital on the Río de la Plata grew out from the colonial core around Plaza de Mayo and San Telmo into 48 barrios: Avenida de Mayo and its historic cafés, the French-style palaces of Recoleta, the parks of Palermo to the north and the old port barrios of La Boca and Barracas to the south. Porteños live by the corner café, the parrilla and the bodegón, eat late, buy pizza by the slice at the counter on Corrientes and spend Sundays at the San Telmo and Mataderos fairs.
