One of Istanbul's most sacred Muslim sites, built over the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, standard-bearer of the Prophet Muhammad; the present mosque dates from the early 19th century. Ottoman sultans were girded with the Sword of Osman here on accession, and the İznik-tiled tomb still draws pilgrims and boys dressed as Ottoman princes before their circumcision.
