Lisbon's grand boulevard, about 90 metres wide and 1.1 km long, was laid out in 1879-1886 on the model of the Paris boulevards, over the walled Passeio Público that Pombal had built after the 1755 earthquake. Under its old trees run side alleys of black-and-white calçada with fountains, kiosks and benches, and it is still where Lisbon parades, celebrates and protests.
