The national theatre closes the north side of Rossio. It opened on 13 April 1846, built on the ruins of the Palácio dos Estaus, the old seat of the Inquisition, and was gutted by fire on 2 December 1964 during a Macbeth. It reopened in September 2026 after three years of restoration.
