A wedge-shaped 1870s pub remade from 1905 by H Fuller Clark and Henry Poole into an Arts and Crafts interior unlike anything else in London: copper and marble friars sing carols, fish for eels and drink all over the walls, and the 1917-21 marble vault at the back is unlike anything else in the city.

Good to know
- Look up in the back vault for the mottoes and nursery-rhyme reliefs; the friars outside point to the old saloon.
- City office crowd fills it from 17:30 on weekdays and drinks on the pavement; go mid-afternoon for the room.
