Traps
- Watch outCostumed characters on Hollywood Boulevard
Performers dressed as superheroes and cartoon characters pose for photos outside the TCL Chinese Theatre and along the Walk of Fame and then ask for a 'donation'. A tip is voluntary: agree on it, or say no, before the photo, and walk away if anyone gets aggressive. The city has long debated limits on the block between Highland Avenue and Orange Drive because of aggressive hawkers.
Source: laist.com - Watch outHawkers on Hollywood Boulevard
The Walk of Fame block between Highland Avenue and Orange Drive has long had a reputation as a 'hunting ground for aggressive hawkers preying on out-of-towners'. You do not have to take anything you are handed or pay for anything you did not agree to buy; keep walking.
Source: laist.com - Watch outDo not pay for 'tickets' to free museums
Entry to the Getty Center, Getty Villa, The Broad (general admission), Griffith Observatory and the California Science Center's core galleries is free. Reserve on the museums' own websites; anyone selling a ticket to these is selling you nothing. At the Getty the only charge is parking.

Source: mlb.com, hollywoodbowl.com, coachella.com - Watch outYou cannot reach the Hollywood Sign
Tours and touts promising to take you 'to the Sign' cannot: it is fenced, watched by security cameras 24/7 and an LAPD officer is stationed nearby, and trespassing is illegal. The legal ways to see it are viewpoints such as Griffith Observatory or Ovation Hollywood, or trails like the Mt. Hollywood Trail.
Source: hollywoodsign.org, hollywoodsign.org - Watch outLeave nothing in the car
Car break-ins are common. The LAPD's 'Lock it. Hide it. Keep it.' reminder (May 2026) says remove valuables from view and hide bags, electronics and chargers; phones, wallets, mail and documents are the items most often stolen. Put things in the trunk before you arrive, not in the parking lot.
Source: arletanc.org - Watch outRideshare at LAX: go to LAX-it
Uber, Lyft and taxis do not pick up at the terminal curbs: take the free green-signed LAX-it shuttle from the arrivals (lower) level or walk to LAX-it next to Terminal 1. Licensed taxis wait at LAX-it and at two marked taxi stands (Parking Structure 3 and the far end of Terminal 7).
Source: flylax.com - Watch outStreet-sweeping and colored-curb tickets
Posted city streets are swept every two weeks, and cars parked during the posted hours are cited. Red curbs mean no stopping at any time; white is 5-minute passenger loading; green is short-term parking (usually 15 or 30 minutes) Monday to Saturday 8am-6pm. Read every sign on the pole before you walk away.
Source: streets.lacity.gov, ladot.lacity.gov - Watch outCheck the bill for surcharges before tipping
Many LA restaurants add a service charge or surcharge. Under California's SB 1524 they may, but only if it is clearly and conspicuously shown on the menu. Service fees usually replace the tip, so do not pay a full tip on top without reading the bill.

Local life
- FunSay 'the' before the freeway number
Angelenos say 'the 405', 'the 10', 'the 101'. It dates from the 1940s-50s when freeways were called 'the Santa Monica', 'the Hollywood' and so on; the numbers took over but the article stayed.
Source: en.wikipedia.org - TipFreeways also have names
Locals mix numbers and names: the Santa Monica Freeway is the 10, the Ventura Freeway is mostly the 101. Overhead signs show only numbers, so translate when someone gives you directions.
Source: en.wikipedia.org - TipPlan your day by area, not by sight
Distances look short on a map but the freeways jam. Locals group plans by neighbourhood (Downtown, the Westside, Hollywood, the Valley) and avoid crossing the city at rush hour. If a 'Sig Alert' is on the radio, a lane is closed by an unplanned incident and the drive will be slow.
