ATM runs Milan's five metro lines (M1 red, M2 green, M3 yellow, M4 blue, M5 lilac), trams and buses; suburban S-line trains (Trenord) cross the city through the Passante tunnel. Duomo (M1/M3), Cadorna (M1/M2), Centrale (M2/M3) and Garibaldi (M2/M5) are the main interchanges. The M4 now runs from Linate Airport through San Babila to San Cristoforo. The historic centre is compact and walkable; the metro is most useful for the Last Supper, Navigli, Porta Nuova, San Siro and the stations.

How to buy
Tap a contactless card or phone at metro gates and on the readers on trams and buses; the fare is capped at the day-ticket price. Paper tickets and passes are sold at metro machines, newsagents/tabacchi and in the ATM Milano app; online passes activate 30 minutes after purchase.

Single urban ticket EUR 2.20, valid 90 minutes on metro, trams and buses (one metro entry). Carnet of 10 EUR 19.50; 24-hour EUR 7.60; 3-day EUR 13; weekly about EUR 17 (introducingmilan.com; not verified on atm.it 2026). Children under 14 travel free with a paying adult. Keep the ticket until you exit: metro exits check tickets.

The Passante (S-lines) links Garibaldi, Repubblica, Porta Venezia and Porta Vittoria; urban tickets are valid inside the city. The Malpensa Express needs its own ticket.

Good to know

- Metro lines M2, M3 and M4 run through the key interchanges; there is no need for a taxi within the centre.
- During Salone del Mobile (April) and fashion weeks the metro is packed and taxis scarce; plan extra time.
- Night buses NM2 and NM4 follow the metro routes after the last trains.
