Abyssinian Baptist Church

A congregation born in 1808-09 when Ethiopian seamen led a walk-out against segregated pews, later led by Adam Clayton Powell Sr. and Jr.; its 1922-23 Gothic Revival church has been a center of Black spiritual and political life in Harlem for a century. Visitors come for the Sunday service in the African American Baptist tradition, with Scripture, prayer and a sermon.

  • No formal dress code, but members wear business casual or Sunday clothes; visitors join as worshippers, so plan for the full two hours.
