The New York Public Library's research center for Black history and culture grew from the collection of the Afro-Puerto Rican scholar Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, who in 1926 wanted it open to the public and kept in Harlem. Its galleries show free exhibitions, and the Langston Hughes Auditorium hosts talks, films and jazz.
