A Civil War-era fortress begun in 1862 to guard the East River approach to the harbor, now a park at the head of Little Neck Bay where the river opens into Long Island Sound. The 1870s Officers' Club, built to look like a castle and nicknamed 'the Castle', houses the Bayside Historical Society.
