The last survivor of the cast-iron fire lookout towers New York built in the 1850s: a 47-foot tower raised in 1857 on Mount Morris after Harlem residents petitioned for one, using James Bogardus' then-revolutionary iron framing. Watchmen rang its 5,000-pound bell to signal fires.
