Get from A to B

Paris has 16 metro lines, 5 RER lines, trams and a dense bus network run by RATP and SNCF under Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM). Since the 1 January 2025 fare reform there are no zones for single tickets: one metro-train-RER ticket covers any rail trip in the whole region (including Versailles and Disneyland), except to the airports, which need a separate airport ticket. Bus and tram use a separate, cheaper bus-tram ticket. Metro runs about 5:30 to 1:15 (to about 2:15 on Friday and Saturday nights); Noctilien night buses cover the rest.

Lines and services

• MetroMétro (lines 1-14, 3bis, 7bis)

  Fastest way around the centre; stations every 500 m. Line 1 (La Défense - Château de Vincennes) and line 14 (Saint-Denis Pleyel - Orly airport, driverless) are the most useful for visitors. Line 14 has served Orly airport since 2024.

• TrainRER A, B, C, D, E and Transilien

  Express regional lines crossing the centre with few stops. RER A to La Défense and Disneyland (Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy); RER B to CDG airport, Gare du Nord and the Latin Quarter; RER C along the Left Bank to the Eiffel Tower and Versailles Château Rive Gauche. Same ticket as the metro since 2025, except airport stations.

• BusRATP buses and Noctilien night buses

  Bus-tram ticket (EUR 2.05 in 2026), which does not allow a transfer to metro. Lines 69 and 72 are scenic cross-city routes. Noctilien night buses (N-prefixed) run roughly 00:30-5:30 from hubs like Châtelet and Gare de Lyon.

• TramTramway T1-T13

  Mostly on the city edge (T3a/T3b ring the boulevards des Maréchaux). T7 connects Villejuif (metro 7) to Orly airport. Bus-tram ticket.

  Docked shared bikes (mechanical and electric) across Paris. Tariffs since 12 Aug 2025: Ticket-V single trip EUR 3 for 45 min; Pass 24h Classique EUR 5 (mechanical, 30 min per ride free); Pass 24h Électrique EUR 10; 3-day pass EUR 20; EUR 300 deposit pre-authorised on a card. Hundreds of km of protected bike lanes including rue de Rivoli. Lime and Dott e-bikes are also available by app.

Good to know

• Validate every ticket, including at exits of RER stations; controls are frequent and fines are around EUR 50 or more.
• A metro-train-RER ticket does not cover a bus; switching from metro to bus needs a second ticket.
• Airport stations need the EUR 14 airport ticket even though the rest of the region is flat-fare; Navigo Jour does not cover airports.
• For a Monday-to-Sunday stay with many rides, Navigo Semaine (EUR 32.40, needs Navigo Découverte card and photo) usually beats single tickets and covers the airports.
• Line 14 and RER A/B are the fastest cross-city links; Châtelet-Les Halles is huge, allow 10 minutes for transfers.
• Pickpockets target metro line 1, line 4, RER B and Montmartre stairs; keep phones out of back pockets.
