Rome's only river island, shaped like a ship and tied to healing since a temple to Aesculapius was built here after the plague of 291 BC; the church of San Bartolomeo (998) stands on the temple site and the Fatebenefratelli hospital, founded in 1582, still treats patients.

Good to know
- Cross from the Ghetto on Ponte Fabricio, the only Roman bridge in the city that survives in its original state, and leave for Trastevere on Ponte Cestio.
- On the stone 'prow' at the downstream tip you can still make out faint traces of the rod of Aesculapius with its snake.
