Monte Testaccio (Monte dei Cocci)

Monte dei Cocci

MonumentLocal favourite

A 35-metre hill made almost entirely of broken Roman olive-oil amphorae, an estimated 53 million of them, dumped here from the nearby river port. For centuries it was Rome's playground: in the 19th century almost the whole city came up on Sundays and Thursdays in October for wine and festivities.
