Built in 1934 to a design by architect Dong Dayou it housed the Shanghai Municipal Library from 1936 and is nicknamed Shanghai's 'Forbidden City' for its glazed yellow tiles, double-eave hip roofs and bracketed flying eaves. It is now a working district library and a protected heritage site, out in Jiangwan where few visitors go.
