SL (Region Stockholm) runs one network across Stockholm County: three metro (tunnelbana) lines, pendeltåg commuter trains, trams and light rail (Spårväg City tram 7 to Djurgården, Tvärbanan, Lidingöbanan, Nockebybanan, Roslagsbanan, Saltsjöbanan), hundreds of bus lines and four commuter ferry lines (80, 82 Djurgårdsfärjan, 84, 89). There are no zones: one SL ticket covers the whole county, including the Djurgården ferry and Waxholmsbolaget boats between Strömkajen and Vaxholm. Tap in at the gate or reader; there is no tap out. Arlanda Express, the airport coaches and Waxholmsbolaget boats beyond Vaxholm are separate companies with their own tickets. Slussen, the Södermalm interchange, is a building site until 2029, so expect detours and long walks between metro and buses there.
Paying: Contactless bank card or phone wallet (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) tapped on the reader, or a ticket in the SL app
How to buy
Tap your own contactless card or phone on the gate or reader to buy an adult single (SEK 43); tap the same card or device again when you change, or you pay twice, and one card pays for one person only. Travelcards (24 h, 72 h, 7 days and longer) are sold in the SL app 'SL-Reseplanerare och biljetter' (pay by bank card as a visitor; activate the ticket before boarding), at staffed booths in metro and commuter-train stations, at SL Center and ticket agents, or loaded on the green SL card (SEK 50, reusable). No cash is accepted on board. Children under 7 always ride free with a ticket holder; up to six children under 12 ride free with a fare-paying adult every day. Discounted fares apply under 20 and from 65; on contactless the discounted fare must be set at sl.se the day before.
Fares
2026 fares, adult/discounted: single SEK 43/26 (valid 75 minutes on all SL services, finish your last change before it expires); 24 hours SEK 180/110; 72 hours SEK 360/220; 7 days SEK 470/290 (valid until 04:30 after the last day); 30 days SEK 1,060/650 normally, but half price SEK 530/325 under a government subsidy for tickets activated by 2 December 2026 (prices from January 2027 not announced). Travelcards are transferable but used by one person at a time. Arlanda: SL single including the Arlanda C station fee SEK 200 adult, or the station fee alone SEK 157 if you already hold any SL ticket (free under 18). Penalty fare without a valid ticket: SEK 1,850 plus a single fare; a blocked card does not count as a ticket even if the gate opens.
Lines and services
- MetroTunnelbana (green, red and blue lines)
All three lines meet at T-Centralen; the green and red lines share the tunnel through Gamla stan and Slussen to Södermalm. Gates at almost every station. E-scooters, hoverboards and similar vehicles, even folding ones, are banned in the metro since November 2024. A new green-line branch from Odenplan to Hagastaden and Arenastaden (planned for years as the yellow line) is expected around 2028 (secondary source); a further line Fridhemsplan - Liljeholmen - Älvsjö is planned. SL is testing longer opening hours for some side entrances on the red line from September 2026.
- TrainPendeltåg (commuter rail)
Stockholm C to Arlanda C in 38 minutes (plus the SEK 157 station fee), Märsta, Uppsala, Södertälje and Nynäshamn. Since 17 August 2026 lines 40 and 41 run on Friday and Saturday nights until about 02:00 and restart about 04:00. Autumn 2026: night closures for track work with replacement buses on some nights: check the SL app.
- TramSpårväg City (tram 7) and Tvärbanan
Tram 7 runs from T-Centralen via Kungsträdgården, Nybroplan and Djurgårdsbron to Nordiska museet/Vasamuseet, Liljevalchs/Gröna Lund, Skansen and Waldemarsudde on Djurgården. Tvärbanan (light rail) links the southern and western suburbs without passing the centre. No gates on Tvärbanan, Lidingöbanan or Nockebybanan: tap your card at the SL ticket post on the platform (green light means valid) or activate the app ticket before boarding, and press the stop button to stop the train. Bikes are allowed on Tvärbanan off-peak and on Lidingöbanan and Roslagsbanan. Lidingöbanan (line 21, Lidingö) is replaced by buses Käppala - Gåshaga in weekday rush hours until further notice.
- BusSL buses (blue inner-city lines, red suburban lines, night buses)
Board at the front door and tap in; no cash on board. On the blue inner-city buses press the stop button and then the door button on the pole to open the doors. Night buses replace the trains when they stop; since 5 October 2026 night lines 190-195, 791, 792, 794-796, 892, 893 and 898 let you get off between stops if you tell the driver when boarding (front door, driver decides). Slussen bus terminal waiting hall closed in March 2026; Nacka and Värmdö buses leave from a temporary terminal on Stadsgårdsleden until the Katarinaberget terminal opens. Bus 402 replaced 71T between Londonviadukten and Slussen from 1 March 2026. Demonstrations on Saturdays can delay inner-city buses and tram 7.
- FerrySL commuter ferries 80, 82, 84, 89
All on a normal SL ticket. Line 82 Djurgårdsfärjan: Skeppsbron by Slussen - Skeppsholmen (some departures, tell the crew) - Allmänna gränd (Gröna Lund, ABBA, Vasa); gates at the piers. Line 80: Nybroplan - Allmänna gränd - Nacka strand and other Nacka piers - Ropsten/Frihamnen; show your ticket on boarding, and at some piers turn the round semaphore sign upright so the boat stops. Line 89: Klara Mälarstrand - Lilla Essingen - Tappström on Ekerö across Lake Mälaren. Waxholmsbolaget boats from Strömkajen to Vaxholm, Rindö and Tynningö also take any SL ticket year-round; beyond Vaxholm (Grinda, Sandhamn) buy a Waxholmsbolaget ticket in the SL app or by card on board and keep the paper receipt to hand in when you go ashore. With a 30-day-or-longer SL card you can ride all Waxholmsbolaget boats from 14 September to 29 April.

SL pendeltåg from Arlanda C in SkyCity (between T4 and T5) to Stockholm C. Buy 'Arlanda passage fee' in the SL app (valid from purchase, 2 hours) or pay at the SkyCity gates. - Bus · 45 minFlygbussarna from SEK 129 online (secondary source, August 2026; official site blocked automated reading)
Vy Flygbussarna to Cityterminalen next to Stockholm C, about 35-45 minutes; buy ahead online or in the app as onboard purchase is not always possible. Coaches stop at Terminal 4 and 5 (no bus service at Terminal 2 since 14 September 2026; SL buses use SkyCity). FlixBus and Vy bus4you also serve Arlanda.
- Taxi · 40 minSwedavia-contracted taxis: maximum SEK 800 for 1-4 passengers (SEK 1,275 for 5-8) to one address inside the marked price zone; one Swedavia FAQ answer says SEK 825

Good to know
- One SL ticket covers metro, trains, trams, buses and the Djurgården and commuter ferries across the whole county: a 72-hour ticket (SEK 360) pays off from the ninth single ride.
- Tap the same card or phone at every change: a physical card and the same card in Apple or Google Pay count as two cards and you pay twice.
- The Djurgården ferry from Slussen to Gröna Lund and the line 80 boat from Nybroplan are ordinary SL services and the cheapest boat trips in town.
- 30-day SL tickets are half price (SEK 530) until 2 December 2026, which beats two 7-day tickets for a longer stay.
- At Arlanda, Arlanda Express is fastest; the SL commuter train costs SEK 200 including the station fee, or SEK 157 on top of a travelcard you already hold.
- Taxi fares are free in Sweden: read the yellow jämförpris sticker (the price of a 10 km, 15-minute trip; Taxi Stockholm shows SEK 357) and ask for a fixed price before you go.
- Slussen is rebuilt until 2029: allow extra minutes to change between the metro, Nacka buses and the Djurgården ferry pier at Skeppsbron.
- Waxholmsbolaget tickets beyond Vaxholm come with a paper receipt you must hand in when you go ashore.
