Founded in 1625 by the monk Tenkai as the 'Mount Hiei of the East' guarding Edo's northeast, Kan'ei-ji was one of the Tokugawa family's two funerary temples; six of the fifteen shoguns are buried here. The Boshin War of 1868 destroyed most of it, and Ueno Park was laid out on its grounds.
