Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi escaped most war damage and redevelopment, so inside the Yamanote loop you still walk lanes of wooden houses, more than 70 temples and old sweet and snack shops. The name comes from the local magazine Yanesen; artists now turn old buildings into galleries and coffee shops, and local rakugo performers even have their own group.
