Il Forcolaio Matto (Piero Dri)

ShopLocal favourite

Piero Dri, born in Venice in 1983, gave up astronomy to become the fourth and youngest remer in the city, opening his workshop in 2013 after an apprenticeship with Paolo Brandolisio. He makes oars and forcole for the gondoliers of the nearby Santa Sofia traghetto and for regatta rowers, all from single blocks of walnut. The workshop hides in a dead-end ramo off the Strada Nova.

Good to know

  • Combine it with the Santa Sofia traghetto two minutes away: those gondoliers row with his oars.
  • He calls himself 'the mad forcola maker' because people told him the trade had no future; ask him why.
  • Weekdays only. Buy directly from him rather than from souvenir shops selling resin copies.
