Paolo Brandolisio, oar and forcola maker

ShopLocal favourite

At 20 Paolo Brandolisio took over the workshop of the legendary remer Giuseppe 'Bepi' Carli, a third-generation bottega, and he still shapes forcole and oars there with Carli's methods. He trained Piero Dri, the youngest remer in the city. A few steps behind St Mark's Basilica, most visitors never notice this narrow workshop full of walnut blocks.

Good to know

  • Weekday hours only, with a long lunch break; look in through the window if the door is closed.
  • Ask to see a gondola forcola next to a smaller one for a sandolo or mascareta: each boat has its own shape.
  • Order directly from him; he works for gondoliers first, so a custom piece takes time.
