The only square in Venice called a piazza (every other one is a campo), framed by St Mark's Basilica, the Campanile, the arcaded Procuratie and Napoleon's wing, the entrance to the Museo Correr. Caffè Florian, opened in 1720, and Caffè Quadri still face each other across it under the porticoes.

Good to know
- Come before 9:00 or after 18:00 in summer, when the day-trippers have gone and the cafe orchestras can be heard across the square.
- Do not eat on the square itself, where prices are inflated; walk a few streets to Campo Santo Stefano or towards Rialto instead.
- It is one of the lowest points of the city and is quick to flood during acqua alta, so check the tide forecast in autumn and winter.
