Places you can reach in the morning and leave in the evening. Public transport first; the car only where it really helps.

Best time to go
Apr-Oct (boats run 28 Mar - 1 Nov 2026; full timetable 25 Apr - 4 Oct)
By car
A car makes this trip easier. About 1 h by car. About an hour's drive from Vienna (Decanter). A car lets you combine both banks, Göttweig and wine taverns, but the classic train-boat-train loop works well Apr-Oct; outside boat season a car (or Wachaubahn/buses) is the practical way. Austrian motorways need a vignette (1-day and 10-day digital vignettes valid immediately; ASFINAG). Melk Abbey parking is free with an admission ticket (validate at cash desk). Roads get congested with tractors at apricot harvest (Decanter).
Good to know
- Go downstream: train to Melk in the morning, boat to Krems after lunch (13:50 is the departure that also runs in pre/post-season), train back from Krems.

- English guided tours at Melk run at 10:55 and 14:55 (Apr-Oct), plus 13:55 May-Sep.
- Dürnstein Abbey is open 28 Mar - 26 Oct 2026 only (Mon-Sat 9-17, Sun 10-17; adults EUR 9.50).
- DDSG ships do not allow your own food on board; book ahead on weekends and holidays.
- Check the DDSG low-water notice the day before: in October 2026 low water forced timetable cuts.
