Founded by Emperor Joseph I in 1707 as a pawn office, the Dorotheum is now the biggest auction house in Central Europe, with about 700 auctions a year. The viewing rooms of the palace are free and open to anyone: Viennese drop in to look at furniture, jewellery and paintings before the sales.
