Spittelau Incineration Plant (Hundertwasser)

Müllverbrennungsanlage Spittelau

Monument

A working waste-to-energy plant that heats part of the city, wrapped by Friedensreich Hundertwasser after a fire in 1987: coloured tiles, onion forms and a 113-tonne golden steel ball on the chimney, hoisted in 1991. It is the most Viennese piece of infrastructure you can see from the U4 and U6.

Good to know

  • You get the best look from the U-Bahn as it passes Spittelau, or from the street at Spittelauer Lände.
  • Look for the oversized cap on a small tower: Hundertwasser's 'Kapperl'.
  • Lit up at night; the ball glows from more than a thousand light points.
