The city's Surinamese-Amsterdam jazz cafe on the Nieuwmarkt: bought by Frits Smit in 1940, it became a haven after the war for the small Surinamese community, Black American soldiers and the jazz scene, and was named after Annie Smit's partner, Surinamese trumpeter Teddy Cotton. It is still a bit scruffy, as a jazz cafe should be, with regular live jazz, swing and funk to dance to.
