The city's main Catholic church, built in 1884-1887 by Adrianus Bleijs facing Centraal Station; Saint Nicholas is the patron of Amsterdam, of sailors and, fittingly between the IJ and the Red Light District, of prostitutes. The interior was restored in 1999.
